Alphabet Lessons by Michael
Neterer, SALT Director
Somali Adult Literacy Training
a program of World Relief Minesota
- It is designed to help Somali adults (and children too!) learn to
read in both Somali and English. This book can help a man or woman who has never
gone to school. If they are learning to read for the first time in their life, they
will learn only the UPPER CASE letters in this book.
- It is for classrooms, but each student should have a 1-on-1 tutor.
The Somali alphabet is easy because the name of the letter IS the sound that it
makes. Learning to read in the mother tongue (Somali) is easier because Somalis
already know the sounds, meaning and grammar of their own language. This book helps
them learn the sound-symbol correspondece to decode the text.
- The lessons are numbered in the order of frequency the sound
occurs in the Somali language. Lessons 1-29 start in Somali and move to English.
Each lesson has vocabulary pages with seven boxes that include a
picture illustrating a Somali word that begins with the key letter. The lesson ends
with a scripture verse that contains a word or sound from that lesson.
